Krishna Tames Kaliya

Bhagavata Purana, Book 10.15–10.17; Vishnu Purana 5.7

The Yamuna at Vrindavan is poisoned by the hundred-headed serpent Kaliya, whose venom kills birds flying overhead and cattle drinking from it. Young Krishna jumps into the river, is coiled by Kaliya, and breaks free. He then dances on Kaliya's hoods, subduing him. Kaliya's wives plead for mercy; Krishna spares him and commands him to leave for the ocean. The story: the triumph of the child-god over poison, and why on Nag Panchami snakes are worshipped not out of fear but in continuity with this ancient truce.
