Yama and Yami — The First Brother and Sister
Yama — son of Surya, first mortal, now lord of death — visits his twin sister Yami (Yamuna) on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, after a long separation. She welcomes him with arati, tilak, and a full meal. Yama, moved, declares that any brother who receives tilak from his sister on this day shall have long life and protection. The older Vedic dialogue (RV 10.10) also shows Yami's intense love being redirected by Yama into the bond that becomes this festival — a Vedic story of sibling love beyond romance.
