Rigveda 10.125 (Devi Sukta); Devi Bhagavata Purana 9.4–9.6; Matsya Purana 50
▾

Saraswati — Vac, the primordial Word, the first of the Tridevi. When Brahma needed to give shape to undifferentiated creation, Saraswati emerged from his mouth holding the veena. Her touch brought vibration, sound, meaning, language. Why she is worshipped on the first day of spring — when learning resumes, when children first write their letters (akshar-arambha), when the arts renew. Kamadeva Incites Shiva and is Revived

Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita, Parvati Khanda, Chapters 3-4 (confidence=medium)
▾

On Vasant Panchami, the god of love, Kamadeva, is said to have shot his flower arrows at Lord Shiva to awaken him from deep meditation, at the behest of the gods who wished for Shiva to marry Parvati. Enraged, Shiva opened his third eye and incinerated Kamadeva to ashes. Later, moved by the lamentations and penance of Kamadeva's wife, Rati, Lord Shiva granted Kamadeva's revival, though he would remain bodiless (Ananga) to all but Rati. This event marks the stirring of spring's passions and the eventual union of Shiva and Parvati.
