Prahlada and the Burning of Holika

Bhagavata Purana, Book 7.5–7.8
▾

Prahlada — son of the demon-king Hiranyakashipu — refuses to worship his father instead of Vishnu. After repeated attempts to kill him all fail, Hiranyakashipu turns to his sister Holika, who has a boon of fire-immunity (a shawl that protects her). She sits in a pyre with Prahlada on her lap. But devotion protects the devotee: the shawl flies to Prahlada, Holika burns to ashes, and Prahlada emerges untouched. The next day becomes the festival of colours — joy at the triumph of bhakti.
