After years of fierce tapasya in sun, rain and snow, Parvati's body was covered with dust and darkened by the elements. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva poured the sacred waters of the Ganga over her, and she shone radiant white as the moon — Mahagauri, the great radiant one. Mention that this day is Durga Ashtami, when young girls are honoured as the goddess (Kanya Puja). Lesson: sincere effort and purity of heart make us shine.
