Navadurga, Night 4: Kushmanda, Who Smiled the Universe Awake
Tradition says that before anything existed there was only endless darkness. Then the goddess Kushmanda smiled — and from her gentle smile the cosmic egg (brahmanda) of the universe glowed into being: stars, planets and the Sun. She lives at the very heart of the Sun, giving it its light and warmth, and Surya bows to her. Explain that her name joins 'ku' (a little), 'ushma' (warmth) and 'anda' (the cosmic egg). Lesson: a kind, warm heart can bring light into darkness.
