Navadurga, Night 5: Skandamata, Mother of the Warrior Prince

Devi Kavacham (Durga Saptashati), verses 3–5; Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita, Kumara Khanda — the birth of Kartikeya and the defeat of Tarakasura
▾

The demon Tarakasura had a boon that only a son of Shiva could defeat him, and he troubled the three worlds. Kartikeya (Skanda) was born, raised with love and nurtured by the Krittikas and his mother, and grew into the commander of the devas' army who defeated Tarakasura. Show Parvati as Skandamata, the mother whose love and blessings make her child brave. Lesson: a mother's love gives us courage.
