Navadurga, Night 6: Katyayani and the Buffalo Demon

Devi Kavacham (Durga Saptashati), verses 3–5; Vamana Purana, chapters 19–21 — Katyayani formed from the devas' radiance at the ashram of sage Katyayana; Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana 82–84) — the defeat of Mahishasura
▾

The buffalo-demon Mahishasura, protected by a boon that no man or god could defeat him, drove the devas from heaven. The radiance of all the devas gathered at the ashram of sage Katyayana and became one shining goddess — Katyayani — who received a weapon from every god. Riding her lion, she faced Mahishasura through his many shape-shifting forms and defeated him, restoring peace. Keep the battle heroic and bloodless. Lesson: when good people unite, together they overcome any wrong.
